Overview
This trip takes you from Dushanbe to Iskanderkul, a beautiful alpine lake located in the Fann Mountains. The distance is about 130 km one way, and the journey usually takes around 3 to 4 hours depending on road and weather conditions. The road includes both paved sections and rough mountain terrain, so a strong vehicle (preferably 4WD) is recommended
Highlights
- Depart early from Dushanbe. Leaving early is important to make the most of daylight and avoid rushing later.
- Drive toward Iskanderkul via the northern route toward Ayni. The drive is very scenic, passing rivers, mountain valleys, and small villages. You can stop briefly for photos along the way.Arrive at Iskanderkul. Take some time to relax after the drive and enjoy the first views of the lake.
- Explore the area. Walk along the lakeshore, take photos of the turquoise water, and enjoy the surrounding mountains. You can also hike to the nearby waterfall, often called “Fann Niagara,” which is about a 30–40 minute walk from the lake. This is one of the highlights of the area.
- Have lunch. You can bring your own food for a picnic or eat at a simple guesthouse or small restaurant near the lake (options are limited).
- Begin the return journey to Dushanbe.
- Drive back to Dushanbe. Expect to arrive in the evening depending on stops and road conditions
